Dallas Green Building Ordinance for New Construction General Requirements

Phase I
effective October 2009

For buildings smaller than 50,000 square feet:

  • Energy efficiency (15% better than 2006 IECC)
  • Water efficiency (20% better than the Water Act of 1992)
  • Outdoor lighting standards
  • Low-sloped roofs must follow Energy Star cool-roof standards

For buildings larger than 50,000 sf:

  • Project must achieve a prescribed number of LEED credits
  • To include at least one water-efficiency and two energy-efficiency credits

Phase II
effective October 2011

All new construction must be:

  • LEED-certifiable or follow another generally accepted standard, such as GreenBuilt North Texas, with minimum one water-efficiency credit and three energy-efficiency credits
